This blog article is all about metallic colours in interior design and ways in which one can integrate this trend into an existing living style and thus elevate the atmosphere. A how-to guide for the right shade, tips and ideas for designing walls and for room situations that catch the eye.

WHAT ARE METALLIC COLOURS?

Metallic colours have a metallic sheen and are reminiscent of metallic surfaces. They are available in various finishes and shades of colour and can be used for a whole range of purposes.

The most well-known metallic colours include gold, silver and bronze, but there are also many other colours such as copper, brass or chrome. They exist as wall colours, as decorative colours and as colour accents.

HOW CAN METALLIC COLOURS BE used IN INTERIOR DESIGN?

One of the most popular ways to implement metallic colours in interior design is the use of accessories such as vases, lamps and picture frames. These objects can be positioned in any room in the house and are guaranteed to catch the eye with their special appeal. By no means, therefore, does the metal effect need to cover an entire surface.

For a more subtle look, smaller accessories come in handy, such as candlesticks, mirrors or miniature sculptures. Those who are brave and want to make a more powerful impact on the atmosphere can use larger pieces to give the room a touch of drama.

golden floor lamp or a copper sculpture are just the beginning. More is always possible: a golden or silver side table that imbues the living room with a dose of glamour, a copper sink in the kitchen as a contrast to traditional stainless steel sinks, a bed made of metal and much more.

Another option is the use of metallic colours in wall paint or wallpapers. For this, one could opt to paint an entire wall with a coat of metallic colours or simply place a few small accents.

Combined with other colours such as white, black or grey, this results in a harmonious atmosphere.

Metallic colours can even be employed in textiles such as cushions, curtains or carpets. These give a room a hint of luxury and can also serve as an eye-catcher.

METALLIC WALL PAINT: METAL COLOURS AS AN ELEMENT OF WALL DESIGN

Walls are an essential element of interior design; they fundamentally change and set the tone. Gone are the times when we painted all our walls white just to be on the safe side. White goes with everything, white is bright and a wonderful background. But: white as a wall colour is also arbitrary and adds nothing to the atmosphere.

Over the past two years, we’ve observed: in interior design, there is a noticeable trend in the direction of designs that place a great deal of focus on wall decoration:

there is a plethora of wallpaper and wall covering options with metallic surfaces that can give interior design a luxurious appearance. Silver wallpaper can make a room seem larger and brighter, while golden wallpaper can make a room warmer and more inviting.

Alongside wallpaper, wall paints with a metallic effect are also on the rise. Chrome, silver, gold, brass and copper – a whole host of variations and hues are available.

THE INDIVIDUAL COLOURS: CHROME, SILVER, GOLD, BRASS, COPPER & CO.

Metallic wall colours are extremely flexible when it comes to getting creative and giving a room with colour that certain something extra.

wall in silver lends a futuristic look to a room and can be a perfect complement to modern furniture. If you want to achieve a dramatic effect, a wall in chrome is the perfect choice. This can make a room appear larger while simultaneously creating a cool and clean look.

For a warm and cosy room, a wall in gold, copper or brass is the ideal choice. These metallic tones give a natural warmth to a room and can be flawlessly combined with classic interior design. A metallic surface can also be applied in combination with another effect colour to obtain a unique and vibrant look.

If the idea is for the interior design to feel young and cool, metal accessories can help to create an industrial ambience: shelves, stools, side tables, lamps and clocks made of iron – often in a shabby look with flecks of rust or signs of wear as if straight from a factory.

TIP #01: METAL EFFECT PLUS PLEATS FOR THE WALL

One option for making the metallic effect even more striking is by adding pleating techniques. Folds on a wall create unique shading and patterns and bring texture and dimension to a room. Metallic colours that are applied using pleating techniques create a one-of-a-kind look that stands out from traditional smooth walls.

TIP #02: METAL COLOURS AND OTHER COLOURS

Metallic colours are great for combining with a range of other colours. They have a particularly harmonious effect in combination with white, black or grey. Pastel hues such as pink or mint also harmonise well with metallic colours.

The bold can even combine strong colours such as red or blue with metallic colours. When doing so, however, one should make sure that the metallic colours don’t become too dominant and disrupt the main colour of the room.

TIP #03: BEAUTIFUL LIVING WITH METAL OPTICS

The best thing about using metallic wall colours is that they go with almost every style of interior decor. You can use them in a modern, minimalist room or integrate them into a classic room to create an atmosphere of luxury and elegance. Particularly in combination with fine materials such as velvet or silk, a very special atmosphere is created.

TIP #04: OTHER MATERIALS WITH METAL OPTICS

As dramatic of an effect as metallic colours have in rooms and especially as wall paint, they are just as flexible when it comes to combinations with other materials in interior design.

Beautiful textiles or a diverse range of woods create a fascinating dialogue with metallic colours and influence the interior design to a great extent. And as the latest trends show, anything is possible: a copper wall colour with an exquisite cashmere blanket, oxidised silver candleholders with polished larch wood, armchairs with chrome frames alongside leather sofas.

TIP #05: APPLY WISELY

If you decide to add metallic colours to the interior of your home, you should be careful not to overdo it. A room filled with too many metallic elements can quickly seem cluttered and noisy. Instead, simply use a select few accents or one main metallic colour in order to obtain a subtle and elegant effect.

BOTTOM LINE.:WE LOVE METALLIC COLOURS, AND THIS IS HOW WE APPLY THEM

Metallic colours are a timeless trend in interior design. They have a major influence on the ambience of a room and can be implemented in a range of different variations and shades.

They have a particularly harmonious effect in combination with white, black or grey, but can also be combined with strong colours for those who like to be bold. The use of metallic colours can help a room to appear larger.

Aside from this, today we find design elements in metallic colours in all rooms of the house: as small, carefully placed statement pieces, as a couple of golden brushstrokes in a wallpaper design or as a light fixture that fills the room.

In a contemporary ambience, metallic colours are now an absolute must. In our opinion, it is well worth investing in high-quality accessories or wall colours with a metal look, because we’ll appreciate them for a long time to come and this trend isn’t going anywhere.
