Inspiring materials

There are so many options, it's hard to choose well. If you plan to invest in a fine, expensive new kitchen, you'll need to consider a few things before you get started. One key lies in the right choice of materials. This influences not only the aesthetics but also the functionality of the kitchen.

Our experienced team at the Design Centre in Mils is happy to help take away any worrying. You will be able to find out what is most suitable and what the latest trends are during a personal meeting.

Not all that glitters will last. Anyone investing in a new kitchen today is not just looking for trends — but for design that lasts. Aesthetics that touch. And materials that convey tangible quality.

In the home INTERIOR showroom in Mils, you can see what a modern kitchen looks like: dark natural stone with different graining, textured fronts in light-coloured wood, framed cabinets and lighting that accentuates every detail. Modern kitchens show attitude, they are often reduced and functional per se, and yet they are still sensual.

Materials — and not trends

Anyone thinking about a new kitchen can quickly feel overwhelmed: lots of options don't make decisions any easier. So if you're planning to invest in a high-quality kitchen, you'll want to take a close look at all the options.

Materials are a key element when planning a kitchen. Looks and suitability for everyday use must match. And then there's the budget, you should also keep an eye on. Good advice paired with a holistic perspective, with experience and a feel for coherent combinations pays off.

Today, we are looking at one specific aspect: the materials. We provide an outline of their properties, pros, and cons — and thereby create a sound base for good decisions.

Kitchen fronts and worktops

functional & elegant

The choice of surfaces is a key factor in modern kitchen planning, that much is clear. Apart from classics such as wood, stainless steel or varnish, there are increasingly more innovative materials.

1. HPL (High Pressure Laminate)

A robust laminate, food-safe and easy to clean. With many possible decors, HPL can be customised to suit any ambience. It is ideal for everyday fronts and worktops that are used a lot.

2. MDF (medium density fibreboard)

MDF boards are an excellent choice if yof want to paintoor process them. They are often used for coated fronts with a contemporary look. Important: MDF must be sealed with protective coatings as it is sensitive to moisture.

3. Quartz composite

This is a compound of natural stone granulate and resins. The material has practically no pores, it is extremely easy to clean and hard-wearing. It is therefore ideal for heavily used work tops.

4. Fine stoneware

A ceramic material with high density. It is very durable, stains, water and scratches hardly stand a chance, making fine stoneware an excellent solution for modern kitchens with high demands.

5. Quartzite

Quartzite is a natural stone with personality: it is scratch and heat resistant and has an expressive texture. Some kinds are not really suitable for wet areas. It is essential to seek good advice before deciding in favour of quartzite.

6. Laminate

Economical and versatile. Laminate can look surprisingly stylish when mounted on MDF. The surface is hard-wearing and the design options are numerous.

Natural materials in the kitchen

Warm, sincere, durable

In many of our projects, we consciously choose natural materials. They create a connection between the ambience and the surroundings, they are often very hard-wearing and age beautifully. The most important natural materials in the kitchen:

  • Wood (e.g. oak, beech, maple): warm materials with a lively look due to different grains and finishes
  • Concrete: modern and purist — but requires sealing.
  • Stainless steel: hygienic and professional, particularly elegant with a matte finish, not very easy to clean, oil, fingerprints, and even water are visible.
  • Ceramics: versatile, hard-wearing, colourfast — and therefore ideal for design-conscious kitchens.

Another natural material rarely used is hard-wearing bamboo, for example — definitely an option for a unique look.

Kitchen design with a vision

Planning a kitchen involves long-term and detailed considerations. It's not just about colours, but also about the feel, usability, light reflection and cleaning. And the question of how the kitchen is integrated in the entire living space.

✔ Island or row?

✔ Storage space visible or hidden?

✔ Handles, handle strips or push-to-open?

✔ Contrasts or tone-on-tone?

Every decision shapes the character of the kitchen. Our interior design team for private living will help you ask the right questions — and develop a coherent concept.
